Oaklandish is a brand that is always collaborating. From parties at Children’s Fairyland, to printing t-shirts repping Tacos Sinaloa and creating ice cream flavors with Humphry Slocombe, and regularly supporting Oakland nonprofits, it’s hard to keep up with what’s happening in the Oaklandish community. That’s why we wanted to call your attention to one of the many ways Oaklandish collaborates: through music.
Since 2000, Oaklandish has specialized in designing and producing civic pride t-shirts that spread local love and portray Oakland in a positive light. And while we’re all about tangible goods we can wear, we also love the platform that Oaklandish has established to uplift Oakland artists, charitable causes and cultural events. If you’re looking to refresh your Springtime playlists and wardrobe, here are a few of our favorite looks from the Spring collection and some DJs they’ve recently collaborated with.
This month, Bay Area native DJ Dion Decibels released his second mix for Oaklandish. It was long-awaited – the first mix was released four years ago. Featuring some of the best of the Bay’s artists like Daveed Diggs’ Clipping, jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, and the soulful Netta Brielle, this is a soundtrack to introduce you to the Bay’s music scene or reminisce in it.
You can stream the mix on Soundcloud, or get a free CD with a $50 in-store purchase.
They’ve also hosted and collaborated with a few of our favorite female DJs in the Bay. A mixtape release with DJ Umami recently went down at Era Art Bar, giving out 100 free mixtapes to lucky guests. DJ Umami spins for the Golden State Warriors, Nike, Q102.1fm, and female group Peaches Crew. Check her out.
Last month, the Downtown Oakland shop hosted DJ Shell Heart for Volume 3 of her Heart of a Female Cypher, bringing a lineup of hard-hitting female MC’s to rock the mic. Check her out.
