Mother’s Day Gift Guide, Part 1: Bags of Ideas for Mom

All mothers need a bag, and like mothers, bags come in a wide variety. Here is a selection of high quality, locally designed and handcrafted bags to make that perfect gift for Mother’s Day, or any day.

Left: The genuine leather Lips Bag from Oakland’s Claflin Thayer & Co comes in a range of sizes and colors.

Right: From San Francisco’s Molly M Designs, the Pouch 34 Metallic is pictured in gold leather with a natural leather wristlet and antique brass hardware.

Left: The Daily Bag from San Rafael’s Rough Linen ticks all the boxes. One piece, folded cunningly as origami and shaped to mold to your side while comfortably holding all the things you need for your day, including a laptop if that’s your bag. There is a pocket for small things, but otherwise it is a plain as can be. Sling it over your shoulder or carry it in your hand. Stuff it full for carry-on, fold it to pack.

Right: From Napa’s Yolotli, the Mercadito Bag is handmade from raw denim with vegetable tanned leather handles, and a hand-painted vegetable tanned leather appliqué by fine artist Mikey Kelly on the front. Mercadito is a perfectly sized fun and sturdy every-day companion.

Left: The Mathilde Clutch from Oakland’s Nanedi Valles is constructed of light or dark green camo printed leather, lined in pink suede, with their signature brass or silver ringlet hardware.

Right: From San Francisco’s Aplat, the Jardin Bouquet Tote made of denim is a reusable flower garden tote designed to hold flowers, garden stems, and herbs. The two straps wrap around and tie in front for easy bundling, while the back-seam opening easily hooks on a wall or doorknob to hang vertically. Perfect for gifting bouquets, wedding parties, and special occasions. Surprise someone special by leaving a “sac a fleur” on the doorknob to find when they come home.

Left: The Supertote from San Rafael’s Equipe is an everyday tote made of durable Japanese denim that’s also a highly organized bag for travels near and far.

Right: From San Francisco’s Millie Lottie, the Branch Market & Picnic Tote is an “every person” tote with their trademark rectangle-shaped and removable cutting board, and new thermal lining which is perfect for carrying a side dish, salad bowl or pie/cake, along with a bottle of wine (or two) and serving utensils. Remove the cutting board and you have an everyday tote as a purse, or for computer or books.

Left: The Tan Italian Leather Tote from the East Bay’s MONOLISA is a classic lightweight leather bag, perfect for someone on the go. It has a removable leather fringe design featuring two sparkling clear Swarovski crystals mounted in silver hardware.

Right: From Town & Country Mouse Design, made of vegetable-tanned leather, the Quiver is a light as a feather cross-body or shoulder bag for carrying essential tools and valuables.
