Clouds + Ladders

Kate Joseph is a sculptor-turned-jewelry designer manifesting magic in a solar-powered studio nestled in a redwood forest about an hour north of San Francisco. Under the name Clouds + Ladders, she crafts jewelry from two contrasting materials, brass and polymer clay. When combined, these materials are lightweight but with a substantial presence, and evoke the contrasts soft/strong, playful/formal. Each piece is meticulously crafted with attention to weight, balance, positive/negative space, and tactile experience – evoking the satisfying texture of a well-worn worry stone.
Kate’s specializes in creating jewelry inspired by art for museum stores. Some recent collaborations include a collection inspired by Ruth Asawa’s work for her retrospective at SFMOMA, earrings inspired by Matisse’s paintings for the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Matisse in the 30s exhibit, and a collection of jewelry inspired by Clyfford Still’s paintings for the Still in Denver.
