A Walking Guide to Oakland from Bag Maker Morgan Abbott

Morgan Abbott’s bags are made for trips. Her handy MoMurray dopps fit into her weekenders and bags, and the waxed canvas often used for her products makes them extra durable. In between sewing in her Lake Merritt home, she often takes walks around the neighborhood— sometimes making drop offs at local retailers. Here she shares a few favorite stops along her route.

One of my favorite things about living/working in Oakland is taking little walking adventures to visit some of my favorite spots. A go-to for me is a little jaunt around Lake Merritt – then I cut over to Old Oakland to start the real adventure.

Coloso Coffee
I like to start off at Coloso Coffee. I met Jose years ago when he was working at Grand Coffee in San Francisco. I was super excited when I found out he was opening his own spot in my new neighborhood with his friend and business partner, Renzo.

Marion + Rose Fine Goods
Once I’m good and caffeinated, I’ll head over to Marion + Rose where I can spend hours shopping and talking with Kerri. She opened her shop in 2011 and recently moved a couple doors down – if you’ve never been or just haven’t been lately – do yourself a favor and visit the new spot! This is my go-to for gifts or when I just need to treat myself. No matter how much time I spend here – I always find something new.

Umami Mart
Umami Mart is right around the corner. I’ve been slowly adding to Ella’s bar collection and we recently got our favorite kitchen knife here. They’ve always had a nice selection of sake and beer, but recently added whisky to the list – they’ll help you find your new favorite!

Crown Nine
I can never resist a visit to Crown Nine. Everyone here is amazing, they have beautiful shiny jewelry and we had our wedding rings made here. Every now and then I get a little something for Ella, and she’s never disappointed!

The Trappist Belgian & Specialty Beer
After all this shopping and talking, I pop into The Trappist for a pint, and if I’m lucky a chat with Jess! She always helps us find the perfect beer and makes us feel like family.

Two Jacks Denim
On the way home I walk up Broadway, so I can pop in Two Jacks Denim to see if there’s something I just have to add to my collection, and of course to have a chat with Tommy. He’s the guy that’ll help you find the perfect fit!

Telegraph Beer Garden
There’s just one more stop and that’s Telegraph aka Beeryland. I gotta have one more pint and a veggie burger with double american cheese – they make the best in town!
