Illustrator Sophie Tivona’s Oakland studio houses many rocks. It started with a trip to the Russian River, when she collected a few rocks and painted a portrait of them lined up together.
She began collecting more rocks from her travels in California and painting watercolor portraits of them in small groups.
Sophie loves the idea of giving reverence to these tokens of travel; the human instinct to collect, gather, and beachcomb showing our unique aesthetic, and chronicling her own choices fascinates her. Here you can experience a few portraits as she makes them.
